Most of your visitors are on a phone. Design for that first.

More than half of UK web browsing now happens on mobile, and Google indexes the mobile version of your site. The desktop design is no longer the main event.

Most websites are still designed the way they were ten years ago: on a large screen, in a meeting room, with the phone version squeezed in at the end. The numbers say that order is backwards.

Phones are the majority

StatCounter's figures for the United Kingdom put mobile at 53.6 percent of web browsing in September 2026, against 41.8 percent for desktop and 4.7 percent for tablets. The mix varies by audience, so check your own analytics; business-to-business sites often see more desktop use in working hours. But the national picture is clear: the typical visit now starts on a phone.

Google reads the phone version

Search has made the same shift. Google's documentation says it indexes and ranks sites using the mobile version of their content, crawled with its smartphone crawler. Only content shown on the mobile site is used for indexing, so text, links or details you hide on phones can quietly cost you visibility. Google's advice is to tuck secondary content into accordions or tabs rather than remove it.

What mobile-first actually means

Mobile-first is not a smaller copy of the desktop site. It is a different set of constraints: one column, a thumb rather than a mouse, patchy connections and attention measured in seconds. Designing for those constraints first tends to improve the desktop version too, because it forces the hard choices about what matters.

  • Put the one thing a visitor came for in the first screen on a phone, not three scrolls down.
  • Make tap targets generous and keep the main action within reach of a thumb.
  • Keep the same content on every device. Collapse it if you must, but do not cut it.
  • Test on real phones on a mobile connection, not only in a narrowed desktop browser.
  • Keep forms short, use the right keyboard for each field, and let browsers autofill.

When most of your audience meets you on a phone, the phone is the website. Everything else is the alternative view.
