PostgreSQL
Postgres is where the records live. We design the schema with you, on an instance in your name, so a spreadsheet does not become the system of record again.
What it is
PostgreSQL is an open-source relational database: tables, transactions, JSON when you need it, GIS when you need it, and a reputation for being the serious default. Instagram, Reddit, Apple, Twitch, and Notion have all run large estates on it. If a product has a source of truth, it is often Postgres.
It is not a spreadsheet. It is the record. ORMs like Prisma sit in front. Hosts like RDS, Cloud SQL, Neon, and Supabase rent it to you. The skill is the schema, the migrations, and the backups, not the logo on the console.
What it does
Teams use Postgres for accounts, orders, CMS content, anything that must not double-charge or vanish. Relational integrity is the point. Document stores win some realtime cases. Postgres wins the cases you will still have in five years.
We name tables after the work. Migrations live in the repo. The instance is yours. We do not prototype on fake data that has to be rebuilt to ship.
Why we use it
The database the product actually owns.
Schema in the repo. Migrations you can read. Supabase or a host you choose. The prototype uses the tables we would keep. You click the product against real shapes. A dump you can restore is part of the handover. We do not keep a copy as leverage.
If nobody can restore it, you do not own it.
Built on it
Moved onto Postgres early and kept it as the social graph grew.
A well-known PostgreSQL deployment at community scale.
Apple
Has used Postgres inside a number of large internal and cloud services.
Twitch
Relies on Postgres for core product data.
Notion
The workspace product sits on a serious Postgres estate.
