Squarespace
Squarespace can be the right first site. We say so when it is, and we say when it will stall: custom checkout, real tools, a tenth language.
What it is
Squarespace is a hosted website builder aimed at small businesses, restaurants, portfolios, and studios that want a designed template and a single bill. It is not trying to be AWS. It is trying to be the site a florist can edit on a phone.
Commerce, booking, and email exist in the product. The ceiling is real: custom data models, complex auth, and performance under ad spend all get awkward. The honest use is a beautiful brochure with a shop that is not a marketplace.
What it does
Teams use Squarespace when they need a site this month, with photography, a menu, a few products, and a domain. Designers restyle templates. Developers rarely live here.
We take the brief if it fits. We say no if it is a product story Squarespace cannot ship. The account stays in your name.
Why we use it
A hosted site when the brief is small and the team is smaller.
A short design system inside the product. Clear limits in the brief. A path to Next.js written down before you hit the wall. When they needed more, the copy and the structure came across.
A first site should not pretend to be a product platform.
